Pretend Play is tremendously powerful! The K1 Blog ‘The Power of Pretend Play’ 12.11.21 explains why!
The Pretend Play Area in the K1 Pod is presently set up as a Pet Shop, linking to our Unit of Study focusing on ‘Living Things’.
Maybe you could set up a pet shop at home and explore playing imaginatively together as a family! If your child speaks another language at home, please take the time to play with your child in your Home Language.
Here are some some resources you may wish to use, to set up your pet shop:
Soft toy pets such as cats, dogs, mice, fish, turtles, hamsters, rats etc
Baskets, boxes, pretend play food, food/water bowls, blankets, brushes, leads/leashes, clear plastic box to represent a fish or turtle tank, cash till, pretend phone/ computer
Dress up clothes for the customer, shopkeeper, pet
Pretend money, price labels, posters
In your pet shop, you could extend learning by adding some farm animal pets, such as pigs, lambs, chickens, ponies. Or you could further discuss what is a suitable pet by using zoo animals such as elephants, monkeys, snakes. The book ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell is a lovely book to read together to discuss what is a suitable pet. You could also play with toys such as unicorns and dinosaurs in the pet shop to explore creativity and imaginative thinking!
Maybe you could also add fact and fiction books about pets to your shop or perhaps you could make your own!
Encourage your child to take on different roles, such as a pet, a customer or a shopkeeper and interact with them to enhance their learning and skills.
I often shop at Daiso and Ikea to buy resources for pretend play! However, please don’t feel a shopping trip is necessary. It is amazing what you can find around the house and It is also fun to make your own pets, food, animal carriers etc out of recyclable materials.
If you do decide to create your own pet shop, I would love to hear about it!
